Artist’s Statement:
My studio is much like a stage for a stand-up comedian and my work is most often a vehicle that explores my fascination and frustrations within a world that seems to “give me no respect”. The viewer is given a self-portrait (often in metaphor) of a lost soul in a complex universe of technology, politics, and uncertain relationships.
While autobiographical, my work is not quite narrative. The story is never completely told. Lacking the denouement, the viewer is left hanging in an ambiguous scenario. Not quite a short story and barely a joke, my work lingers on just one sentence or line somewhere just before the “punch line”, urging the viewer to read between those lines for a resolution or comic relief. These exploitations of my personal encounters and fears ultimately reveal the clichés of everyman, a swansong of manhood. Yet even as my “self-portraits” transcend into a much bigger picture, my story is not an epic portrait of the universal man. It is tethered by honesty (and a bit of self-deprecating humor) and projects nothing more than the painfully honest image of a pretentious man, taking an objective glimpse into the mirror.
